Andrew and Annedria Beckham
Our story starts in 2005. when we harvested the timber, pulled the stumps and tilled the first two acres of what was to become our very own little vineyard.
We took our first cuttings of Pommard and Wadenswil clones from La Bonne Terre Vineyard and stayed up late every night to cultivate the vine starts by hand. While the plants were rooting, the land was prepared and the rows were carefully laid out. In the spring Andrew came home and drilled the holes to plant the vines, while Annedria and Andrew’s grandfather Dow rolled grow tubes.
The first 2.25 acres of newly-rooted vines were planted to .75 acres of Pommard and Wadenswil and 1.5 acres Dijon 115 sourced from another local vineyard. We chose to dry farm the vineyard and farm organically.
As we grew our family, we grew our vineyard. Along with the birth of our first child, Sophia Marie, came the planting of another acre of Dijon clone 115 and .5 acre of Pommard. In 2008, after the birth of our second child, Olivia Anne, we planted another 1.5 acres of Dijon clone 777. In Spring of 2013 on the steepest, rockiest section we could find we added 1 acre of Riesling.
We planted the vineyard to a medium density with vertical trellising. Throughout the growing season Andrew does extensive shoot positioning and hand-thinning of leaves to ensure maximum sunlight reaches the grapes.
As the season progresses, we continue to reduce yields, which concentrates all of the vine’s energy into a few, precious clusters. These few precious clusters from our prized vineyard are what make up our Beckham Estate Pinot Noir. A true family endeavor and a labor of love, we hope that you enjoy the wine as much as we enjoyed making it.
